Candy Land Comes to Life! Chad Collaborates Once Again with Artist Will Cotton

Cockaigne, A live performance conceived of, designed and directed by Will Cotton and curated by Stacy Engman for Performa 11 at Prince George Ballroom

I was very excited to once again work with dear friend Will Cotton www.willcotton.com, and collaborate on the makeup looks for this fabulous evening of art, music dance and festivity. I have created many makeup looks for his paintings and many are featured in his new book, Will Cotton: Paintings and Works on Paper.

Dancers from New York City Ballet were dressed in custom cotton candy creations and set against a back drop of Cotton Candy Clouds. The live-action piece was performed in two acts - ACT I: Whipped Cream Duet for Two Violins and ACT II: Cotton Candy.

For the piece, we created an ethereal makeup look with pops of bright pink (Lollipop Lip & Cheek Stain) on the cheeks, glistening silver-whites (Silver and White Shimmer Eye shadow mixed and applied with a wet brush all over the lid) and Pink Shimmer (Icing on the Cupcake Eye Shadow) as an accent paired with doe-eyed eyeliner (Aurora Crème Eye Definer). Lollipop was painted on the lips as a stain then a veil of Candy Cloud 9 Lip gloss (which tastes like Cotton Candy!) was layered over for a 3-D effect.

A signature Cotton Candy fragrance, “Whipped Cream” was created exclusively for the event by Pascal Gaurin for IFF.

Get The Look: Daytime Drama

Jim DeMarco has teamed up with Three Custom Color Specialists to create The Daytime Drama Collection: the perfect go-to palette for the look of a star!
Here are Jim's tips on how to get the look:

STEP 1 - Create a flawless complexion with Three Custom Color Specialists Crème Concealer/Foundation using your fingers (my favorite tool!), a sponge or foundation brush.

STEP 2 - Apply Siren (a bronze crème) directly under the cheekbones and blend back to the ear to contour and define the cheek. Then, apply Siren on the eyelid as a base for other shadows or wear it alone as a quick pick-me-up to brighten the eyes!

STEP 3 – For a natural flush, blend Red Carpet Lip & Cheek Stain onto the apple of the cheeks. Make sure to blend back to where you contoured under the cheek! Then apply Red Carpet onto the lips for a longwearing reddish-mauve tint.

STEP 4 – Apply Back Lit Crème high on the cheekbones to highlight (pro makeup artist trick!) Also, apply it on the brow bone, inner corner of the eye, and slightly under the eye to brighten.

STEP 5 - Line the eyes with Close Up Crème Eye Definer, working along the lash line from the outer corner to the inner eye. Next, try winging out the line for some Old Hollywood Glamour. Or, for a modern, smokey effect, smudge the top and lower lash lines with Three Custom Color Specialists Contour Eye Shadow Brush.

STEP 6 - Complete your look with a swipe of Camera Ready Lip Gloss. Wear over Red Carpet Lip & Cheek Stain for added drama or alone for a perfect pout.

To finish the look, apply Three Custom Color Specialists Translucent Face Powder and define the brows with Three Custom Color Specialists Brow Powder and Clear Brow Gel.

NYFW Spring 2012 Trend Report

Every season, we at Three Custom Color Specialists show you our favorite beauty trends from the runways of New York Fashion Week, their inspirations, and the products to get these looks now!

What was the biggest influence on the catwalks this season? HAIR! HAIR! HAIR! Designers went wild on the catwalks, showcasing models in big 80’s hair, or streaks of blue and green and even sopping wet hair! As a result, the makeup across the board remained polished, versatile and pretty, to balance out the statement ‘dos. These fresh, simple makeup looks are perfect for spring – no matter if your look is girly and soft, or tailored, structural and slick.

Here’s a rundown of our favorite beauty trends and tips on how to put these together now!

POLISHED WITH POP
Clean makeup look on the face anchored with bold, almost neon pops of pink or coral on the lips, and coordinating washes of color on the cheeks and eyes.

Get the look: We loved the flirty look at Anna Sui. This modern pinup girl was reminiscent of Rita Hayworth with a touch of 70’s Lauren Hutton thrown in! Try: Warm Peony as a wash of color on the eyelids, White Shimmer near the tear ducts, Pink Hyacinth Watercolours for Cheeks, and Bora Bora lipstick for that fabulous deep pink lip!
As an alternative, also try: Copacabana Lipstick (a cheery coral) or our Light Brights Lipsticks for a sheer pop of color!

ARCHITECTURAL
Edgier and more masculine ensembles, paired with pulled-back hair, coordinate best with contoured faces and sexy, sculpted cheekbones.

Get the look: The models at Donna Karan pulled off the look of gorgeous gladiators. SUNSET SKIN
This look ruled the runways for Spring 2012. You can’t go wrong with luminous skin, enhanced with a touch of gold and pink, and a hint of shimmer on the cheekbones and the eyes!

Get the look: The models were natural and glowing at Carolina Herrera. Groom the eyebrows with Three Custom Color Specialists Clear Brow Gel, and apply Gilded Eye Shadow on the eyelids and Champagne near the tear ducts. South Africa: Inspiration, Vineyards, and Honey Badgers

Scott Catto, Managing Director, Three Custom Color Specialists, treats us to an inside look at the Co-Founders' recent trip to South Africa...

South Africa. I can’t tell you what’s more exhausting - the safari tours (we saw a real-live Honey Badger!) or the wine tastings!

Drinking wine at 10AM isn't exactly how we like to start our day but our guide didn't have to twist our arms too hard to get us to partake! Heck, how often do you get to the wine country in South Africa?

Each winery treats you to between 5 and 12 different tastings. After 3 wineries, then lunch (with, of course, another bottle of amazing local wine!) nap time comes around quickly. Yes, I know at wine tastings you are just supposed to taste and spit the rest out, but we didn't want to waste one drop. Plus, we weren’t driving!

All kidding aside, our trip and guide was fantastic. We hit beautiful vineyard after vineyard with delicious food and chocolate pairings. It was heavenly!

The Color Association of the United States (CAUS) recently launched its first-ever Beauty/Cosmetics Forecast for Spring 2013 (that’s right, 2013!) which reports the major trends and influences for the color palettes of the season.

Chad Hayduk, Co-Founder of Three Custom Color Specialists, served on the committee to develop the forecast with other notable industry leaders from the color, beauty, and fragrance world.

To celebrate, CAUS held a launch party at the colorful Glassbaby shop in NYC and Three Custom Color Specialists makeup artist Marisa Fazzina and Julianne Carlucci were there to enjoy the fun!

Crème Concealer Foundation- Talk about a multi-tasker! Caramel Rose Lip and Cheek Stain- This earthy rose shade is universal and adds a dewy, fresh and natural flush on every bride. I love it! The pigmented and balmy stain really locks into the skin and stays on all day and it can be worn sheer or built up on for a dramatic look. My best way of applying it: Using your fingers or sponge, apply it to the apples of the cheeks in a circular motion making sure to apply it evenly from apples of cheeks toward your hairline.

FACE: Chad prepped our model by applying a sheer layer of Three Custom Color Specialists Crème Concealer Foundation with a damp sponge and concealed blemishes using our Concealer Brush (Jarusha is wearing Creme Concealer/Foundation #5)

EYES: Chad chose Amped, our new orange eye shadow, to showcase Jarusha’s green eyes. Using a dampened contour brush, Chad applied Amped first to the upper eyelid on the upper eyelid. Then, he applied it along the lower lashline.

CHEEKS: To remain polished, yet keep the emphasis on the eyes, Chad applied Coral Waterlily Watercolours to the cheeks using a sponge, blending the color on the apple of the cheek and cheekbone.

LIPS: Using a lip brush, Chad applied Coral Waterlily to the lips for a sheer, moisturizing lip tint.

Q&A with Makeup Artist Patricia Regan

Patricia often calls upon Three Custom Color Specialists to create custom colors for her high profile work in film and television. Her recent credits include: Remember Me, Shutter Island, Burn After Reading, The Good Shepard, Factotum, Flight of the Concords, and HBO’s five-part miniseries Mildred Pierce, based on the 1941 novel by James M. A native of Switzerland, Patricia originally moved to New York with a scholarship to study dance. It was then when she first became enamored with the power of make up to enhance the arts. “I always loved theatrical make-up and its ability to bring characters alive,” Patricia says. Thereafter, she made a gradual transition to becoming a makeup artist, at first working with photographers for fellow performing arts friends, and then journeyed through all aspects of music, television, rock 'n’ roll, the beauty industry, commercials and ultimately, creating characters for feature films. Patricia says, "I am so lucky and forever grateful, for I love what I do.”

Q: How were you introduced to Three Custom Color Specialists?
A: We met several years ago ( 2002 I think...... ), I used to sit for Will Cotton, who's an amazing painter. I believe it was a birthday party for Will, during which his girlfriend Rose introduced me to Chad and Scott. She had told me all about them prior and I found them so lovely that I wanted to know more about their product.

Q: What's it like to work with us?
A: I enjoy the fact that I can go see them. The turnaround on orders is very quick and they are always a pleasure.

Q: It seems that you work on a lot of period pieces, how do you begin designing makeup for these types of films? How do you approach it? What are your biggest challenges or favorite parts of the process?
A: I guess I have done a fair share of period work, just getting ready for another......... my designs are based on extensive research and my directors visions as well as the actors character. I always try to find little nuances to tell the story, of course working very close with the hair design, costume designer and further the set design. My favorite part, I guess that would be the finished product when everything comes together and looking right for the time period.

Q: What qualities do you look for in products that you bring on set?
A: I need the products that I bring on set to work smooth and simple, as time is always very limited.

Q: Can you describe the makeup looks in Mildred Pierce?
A: Mildred Pierce story spans from 1931 to 1940 roughly, during which tie young Veda is coming of age. Post depression child to the glamour of the late thirties becoming a 'coloratura soprano'... that's all I can say at this time...

Q: What Three Custom Color Specialists products did you bring with you on the set of Mildred Pierce?
A: Custom blended eye shadows, Cream to Powder Blushes and gorgeous lip colors.

Q: What are your favorite Three Custom Color Products?
A: I would have to say my absolute favorites are the Cream to Powder Blushes, I am never without them! They are versatile - I use them continuously on men, children and (of course) women, to enhance the complexion all over, or simply as blush. The application is flawless and I find I have complete control over the saturation of color. The Lip Stains are fantastic; giving me the opportunity to add or change natural lip color without looking like painted on lipstick.

Q: Any particular colors you like the most?
A: For the colors, I would have to say my favorite is a custom blended Creme to Powder blush in a true red that Chad first created for me for Havana Nights, a movie set in the late fifties. I have used it ever since - I think it should be called “Patricia's Red!” The other blush shades always with me are: Beige, Brown, Red and Pink. I love their lip pencils - Warm and Cool Pink, Warm Brown and Burgundy - as well as the Clarifier, fantastic for quick touch ups on set! The lip palettes are definitely great to have on hand. I like that they are small and easy to carry. I have all of them and they have been trusty little saviors!

The challenge: find the right mix of tones to avoid the typical nude lipstick pit falls - we're all familiar with the nudes that are often too pink, too chalky, and too yellow!

NYFW FALL 2011 Trend Report

This fall, designers played up the drama with magnificent tailoring (we loved the fall collections of Michael Kors, Dianne Von Furstenburg, Jason Wu) and billowy, opulent gowns (see: Rodarte, Derek Lam). Though we were impressed by the clothes, these dramatic looks were often paired with makeup that may have been kept too simple or just too garish. Here’s a rundown of the trends we saw on the catwalks and tips on how to make these work in real life!

BERRY LIPS - Pretty, romantic and instantly polished.
As seen on the runways at: Luca Luca, Rebecca Taylor, Peter Som, Carolina Herrara, Cynthia Steffe, and Lela Rose
For bold berry red lips inspired by the models seen here at Luca Luca (Photo: Racked.Com) - Line the lips with Burgundy Lip Liner and apply Rosie the Riveter Lipstick (a rich, blue- red).
This look is probably the most wearable on it's own. However, for a softer take, try Mauve Lip Liner with Santorini Lipstick. Remember, the focus here is on the lips, so keep the eyes soft.

CAT EYES - Perhaps an homage to the makeup seen in Black Swan, these dramatic eyes are tough to pull off the runway into real life (we don’t recommend bleaching out your eyebrows either!)
As seen on the runways at: DKNY, Derek Lam, Vivienne Tam, and Jason Wu.
For the look inspired by this model at Jason Wu (Photo: Getty Images) -- Layer Cool Aubergine applied with a damp eye shadow brush on the upper and lower lash lines and along the crease, tapering out to a triangle shape. Fill in the triangle with Gold Eye Shadow. Use Wallflower Lip & Cheek Stain to softly contour the cheeks and apply Whisper Sheer Lipstick for shimmering nude lips.

For a real-life version of this look, try Cool Black and gold instead of aubergine (the combination of purple and yellow on the skin can look like a bruise!) Also, if you have deep set eyes, stay away from this look. Since dark colors recede, dark shadows will make deep set eyes seem even more sunken.

STRONG BROWS - The 90’s came back in a big way, with a strong, masculine brow.
As seen on the runways of: Alexander Wang, Proenza Schouler, Monique Lullhier, LAMB, Naeem Khan, Marc by Marc Jacobs.
To re-create the look seen here at Proenza Schouler (Photo: GoRunway.com) -- Match your hair color with a Brow Powder (Brow Powder #5) and fill in the brows with our Brow Brush.

We love a well-groomed brow, it anchors the eye, though we’d prefer to see more polished and defined eyes rather than this heroin-chic look.
For a real-life version of this look: fill in sparse areas of the brows with a coordinating brow powder and apply Clear Brow Gel to lift and shape the eye. Define the lash line with Opaline Creme Eye Definer, and avoid this reddish-brown shade that makes the eyes look tired (try Warm Brown Sugar, instead).

NUDE LIPS - The nude lip is a staple regardless of season. Versatile nude lips were showcased in a variety of finishes; from matte, to pearly, to glossy, and some with a touch of coral. As seen on the runways at: AnnaSui, Carlos Miele, Tommy Hilfiger, Erin Fetherston, Charlotte Ronson

For the look scene here at Nicole Miller (Photo: Andrew Burton, AP) -- Apply Cool Brown Sugar Eye Shadow with a damp brush to line the lower lash line and create a precise rectangular shape on the upper eye lid. Highlight under the brow bone with Cool White Eye Shadow. Apply Light Clarifier on the lower inner rim of the eye. Use a sheer layer of our Creme Concealer/Foundation as lip color and apply Translucent Powder all over the face for a finished, doll-like complexion.

For a real-life version of this look: Blend the eye shadow for a softer contour of the eyes and avoid looking washed out with a layer of Nude Attitude on the lips, our new coral-based nude.

Three Custom Color Specialists partnered with Mario Badescu to talk spring makeup and skin care tips. The event was hosted by Felicia Walker Benson, Editor-In-Chief of This That Beauty with a menu of candy and cocktails provided by Hpnotiq at the brand new lounge, Studio XXI in New York City.

Take a behind-the-scenes look at Chad Hayduk, Co-Founder of Three
Custom Color Specialists, prepping our model for the Sweetest Thing
Collection photo shoot! Re-creating this fresh spring look is simple,
just follow these steps –

FACE: Start with a flawless canvas. For sheer to medium coverage, apply Three Custom Color Specialists Crème Concealer Foundation with a damp sponge (Devon, our model, is wearing shade #3)

EYES: Apply Icing on the Cupcake Eye Shadow from the lashline to the brow bone for a wash of light-reflecting shimmer. Line the eyes with Opaline Crème Eye Definer in Aurora (our water-resistant crème eye liner) using our Eye Liner Brush.

To really make the eyes appear bigger, whiter and brighter, line the bottom waterline of the eye with our cult-favorite Clarifier Pencil.

CHEEKS: Use a sponge to apply Lollipop Lip & Cheek Stain (hot rosy pink) on the apples of the cheeks, blending out along the cheekbone towards the temples.

LIPS: With a lip brush, apply our sweet Candy Cloud 9 Lip Gloss (a sheer pink with gold and silver shimmer that tastes like cotton

Go Green: How to Wear Green Eye Shadow this Spring

All shades of green were spotted all over the runways for spring. There's no better way to rid winter doldrums than with a splash of springy greens to brighten your eyes and here's how:

When working with any brighter eye shadow shades, apply eye makeup first as bold color against a fully finished face can look overwhelming. You might find that after you do your eyes, you don't need anything more a subtle lip and cheek shade- The key is balance.

If you are warm complected look for colors with more of a golden tone to them. Over a tightly lined lash line with Black or Dark Brown eye liner, try Warm Sage Eye Shadow – a shimmering khaki-olive with a dash of bronze wet along the lash line and buffed for a smoky look. Blend Warm Celery (a daring citrine shade!) with a bit of Gold eye shadow into the crease and the inner corners for a bit of contrast and pop. For even more drama pair with an orangey eye shadow like Warm Nutmeg to play off the green.

If you are cool complected, look for more pastel greens and greens with a bit of blue in them as these will look most natural on you. Over a tightly lined lash line with Smoke or Black Eye Liner, try Cool Meadow Eye Shadow – a bright, blue grass tone wet along the lash line and buffed for a smoky look. Blend a bit of Cool Celery which is a soft sea foam into the crease and the inner corners. For more drama accent with a bit of Opal Eye Shadow over Cool Meadow to give a 3-D effect.

Finish both looks with plenty of black mascara on the upper lid only. On lips and cheeks, add a bit of Caramel Rose Lip and Cheek stain (an earthy, rose shade).

Quick tips:

*Green eye shadow with a subtle shimmer is ideal for daytime, while metallic tones are best for evening.

*Green eye shadow is ideal for all eye colors including brown, hazel, and blue. However, it's best to avoid green eye shadow if you have green eyes.

*Never match your eye shadow color to your clothing.

Last weekend, Three Custom Color Specialists Co-Founders Chad Hayduk and Scott Catto joined NYC-based fashion designer, Miles Ehan at the Michael Kohn Gallery in Los Angeles. They were there to celebrate their friend, artist Will Cotton at the opening of his solo exhibition of new works.

You may be familiar with Cotton’s previous work; his painting of Katy Perry, which features the young singer reclining amid candy clouds, was used as the cover art for her album Teenage Dream. (Fun fact: Cotton’s long-time friend and Three Custom Color Specialists Co-Founder Scott Catto assisted making mounds of cotton candy that adorned the set Cotton created for this shoot!)

In this exhibition, Cotton presents paintings in which he incorporates the figure into his landscapes of sweets, rich chocolate, and ambrosial clouds and several of the painting featured in this exhibition featured the lovely Katy Perry.

Celebrity sightings at the gallery also included: James Spader, Molly Shannon, and Fran Drescher.

Rising-star designer, Miles Ehan collaborated with Will Cotton to create many of the “Cupcake Couture” dresses featured in the paintings on exhibition, including a dress composed of cupcake wrappers and a skirt made of cotton candy with a rock candy boddice.

NYFW Spring 2011 Trend Report by Chad Hayduk, Co-Founder, Three Custom Color Specialists

If we learned one lesson from New York Fashion Week for Spring 2011, it’s this: DON’T BE AFRAID TO PLAY WITH COLOR! From intense eyes, to dewy faces with show-stopping lips, this Spring showcased modern, playful takes on beauty!

HIGH WATTAGE LIPS

Vivid semi-matte lips in Orange, Pink, and Red shades ruled the runways. This cheery look was seen at seen at Milly, J. Mendel, Erin Fetherston, Isaac Mizrahi and - our favorite adaptation – Diane Von Furstenburg.

At Diane Von Furstenberg, hot pink lips were accompanied by a simply polished eyes and a clean, luminous face. To get the look:

Begin by applying our Crème Concealer/Foundation with a damp sponge for sheer coverage on the face, and use a concealer brush for more coverage over any blemishes or dark circles. Set with our Translucent Powder. Since this look focuses on the lips, keep the eyes simple. Groom the brows with our Tinted Brow Gel and apply Snow Eye shadow (a pro makeup artist favorite!) to the inner corners of the eye in a “V” shape. Contour your eyes by applying Cool Pebble Eye Shadowthe crease. Skip the eyeliner and finish with a coat of mascara. Apply Bora Bora lipstick with a lip brush for a precise application, blot, and apply again for even more staying power. *For a more office-friendly version of this look, try our Light Brights Lipsticks in Palladium or Area. It’s a gorgeous, flattering pop of color to that lets your own natural lip color come through.

BRIGHT AND SMOKEY

This Spring, you can skip your brown, grey, and beige eye shadow! Don’t be afraid to make your eyes pop with a bold hue: runway looks featured purples, greens, blues, and oranges! We loved the soft washes of color around the eyes seen at Jason Wu, Luca Luca, Betsey Johnson and Oscar De La Renta.

To get the look seen at Oscar de la Renta: The key to wearing this look is to layer and blend, blend, blend! Apply a sheer wash of Cool Celery eye shadow from the lash line to the crease and the inner corners of the eye. Apply Peacock Eye Shadow close to the upper and lower lash lines, as well as on the upper eyelid and blend upwards to the brow bone. For the rest of the face, keep the lips and cheeks sheer and soft. Apply our NEW Caramel Rose Lip and Cheek Stain to the lips and cheeks.

*Does orange eye shadow leave you puzzled? Dramatic orange eye shadow can look great in contrast to blue or green eyes, but, for an off-the-runway version of this look we suggest that cool, rosier skin tones try Warm Aubergine and Cool Lilac Eye Shadow. For Warm, golden skin tones try Warm Nutmeg and Bronze Eye Shadow. For a more wearable version of this look, feel free to play with a lighter hand. A soft wash of color is beautiful, too!

BOLD ALL OVER

You may be familiar with the makeup rule: showcase the eyes OR the lips, not both. This Spring, this adage was challenged and rules were broken on the runways at Betsey Johnson, Zac Posen, Nanette Lapore, and LAMB. Our favorite interpretation of this risky, brazen look was at Marc Jacobs for their 30’s coquette meets 70s glam look!

To get the look seen at Marc Jacobs: Start with a flawless canvas, and de-emphasize brows with a dusting of coordinating face powder. For a barely there flush on the cheeks, apply Pink Hyacinth Watercolours for Cheeks and blend. Apply a layer of Warm Celery Eye Shadow from the upper lash line to the crease of the eye. Apply Cool Black Eye Shadow to the upper and lower lash lines, as well as the crease of the eye and blend. Apply Aurora Opaline Crème Eye Definer to the upper and lower lash lines, and the waterline. Finish with a coat of black mascara. Line the lips with Burgundy Lip Liner and fill in with Santorini Lipstick.

*For a runway-to-real way take on this saucy look, try a lighter hand with the eye shadow and apply Kit Sheer Lipstick, a universally flattering, sheer raisin shade on the lips.

NYFW for Fall 2010 brought us red lips of all shades and finishes, a new bold take on the smokey eye, contoured cheeks, glowing, flawless skin, and perhaps what some would say was the vampire trend gone too far. Here’s what we found…

RED LIPS
From matte to shiny, dark crimson to orange, red lips were all over the runways. This look was seen at seen at Donna Karan, Herve Leger, Vivienne Tam, Vena Cava, Tory Burch, LAMB, and Chakra.

At Donna Karan, this look was a very modern and sleek. It featured glowing skin, a subtle wash of color on the eye, and a bold, stand-out red lip. To get the look:

Apply cool pebble eye shadow all over the eyelid, up to the brow. Use a soft wash of champagne eyeshadow on the lower lid. Make sure to keep eyes bright with light clarifier pencil applied to the lower waterline of the eye. Apply just one coat of mascara and keep brows groomed with clear brow gel. Use cool red lip liner to line the lip, apply Rosie the Riveter Lipstick, layer on Candy apply lip gloss and an additional layer of Crystal Clear lip gloss for that shiny, lacquered look. Use our Crème Concealer/Foundation to create a flawless canvas and face powder #5 for contouring the hollows of the cheeks.

BEYOND SMOKEY EYE

New application alert! For Fall 2010 the smokey eye is going even further. The runways featured eye shadow washed all the way to the brow bone with little or no highlighting. Seen at Derek Lam, Richard Chai, DVF, Carolina Herrera.

To get the look seen at Diane Von Furstenberg: Layer on your eye shadows. Apply Warm Smoke eye shadow from the lash line to the brown. Use Peacock applied to the inner corners of the eye and blended out. Apply a small amount of White Shimmer Eye shadow near the tear duct. Apply Wallflower Lip & Cheek Stain to the high points of the cheeks. Use Cool Beige Lipstick for a semi-matte nude lip.

AU NATURAL
Contouring played a major role on the runways this season, even at the shows where bare faces where seemingly all the rage. The effect ranged from subtle to sculpted, on the runways at Elle Tahari, Yigal Azrouel, Donna Karan, and Michael Kors.

To get the look seen at Michael Kors: Apply Warm Camel Eye Shadow over the lid and Black Eye liner close to the upper lash line. Apply Fawn Eye Shadow along lower lash line. Apply Rose Crème to Powder Blush on just below the apples of the cheeks for a subtle contour. Apply Coral Waterlily Watercolours for Cheeks on the lips with a lip brush to enhance your natural lip color.

PALE, PORCELAIN SKIN
We agree that all looks should start with a flawless canvas. But, where is the line between porcelain and lifeless? Is this the mark of the Vampire trend gone to far? Pale, almost icy skin was seen at Rodarte, Preen, Chakra, Twinkle, Doo Ri, and Peter Som.

To get the look pictured here at Rodarte: Apply Warm Smoke Eye Shadow all over the lid and Cool Brown Sugar Eye Shadow smudged into the upper and lower lash line. Make sure to use a matching brow powder to fill in and define the brows. Apply concealer to match your skin tone all over the lips. On the face use Crème Concealer/Foundation to even out the complexion and a face powder #5 to contour the hollows of the cheeks

The look at Peter Som featured many fall trends - here's the flawless face, with a subtle contoured cheek, and a very deep, plum lip.

To get the look: Apply Cool Camel eye shadow all over the lid, black eyeliner on the upper lid only. Groom the brows looking groomed and natural with clear brow gel. Apply Beige Crème to Powder Blush for a subtle touch of dimension and warmth. Apply Cool Plum lipstick on the lips. For a sheer, more wearable adaptation of this look, try our new Noir Sheer Lipstick.

This morning, I had the pleasure of hosting our very first Image Workshop with The HOPE Program. The session was attended by 2 staff members from the Program’s employment team and 5 lovely ladies who are approaching the end of their journey with the Program’s phenomenal 12 week work readiness and job placement course.

After introducing everyone to Three Custom and our philosophies about beauty for the every day woman, I fielded questions from the attendees on everything beauty – from makeup application to skin tone to skin care.

I also had the opportunity to meet Jacqueline Revan, who will be our very first intern from HOPE. This summer, Jacqueline along with students from FIT and LIM, will learn about the inner workings of Three Custom Color Specialists by working with us in our laboratory. Welcome Jacqueline!

Three Custom visits Dickey at Hair Rules

Last Friday, I finally gave in and submitted to a haircut. With my crazy curly hair, I've had more unhappy haircutting experiences than I care to remember, so a few years ago I just gave up and started trimming it myself. I know it sounds scary, but it actually wasn't so bad for a while (curls hide a lot of errors!). Unfortunately, lately my hair started looking just plain crazy, so when a friend recommended Dickey at Hair Rules I gave him a call. Not only did I get a great cut, but Dickey really taught me about my hair. He is a master! He knows I want long hair eventually, but my poor hair needed a total overhaul so we went short and sassy for the summer and agreed that we would grow it out "together", in a healthy way! Better yet, Dickey's hair products, Hair Rules are AMAZING. My fave - Curly Whip. We'll be doing a sampling program with Hair Rules soon with online orders, so keep your eyes peeled!

A little bit about Oscar Beauty

As usual, (just about) everyone looked amazing at the Oscars. What struck us most about makeup were the lovely RED LIPS. Many actresses, Amy Adams, Jessica Biel, Diane Lane, Amanda Seyfried and Alicia Keys all wore a distinct shade of red. All reds were bright, moist and sheer, yet elegant. The sheerness allows the natural pink of the lips to shine through, which gives a complexity to the color and allows it to be quite flexible so it can be worn with many different gown shades - purple, pink, red and of course, black.

Trae's Trend Report - Fall/Winter '09 - NY Fashion Week

We saw a lot of nude looking faces this season, but we did catch a glimpse or two of color this past week. Fall/Winter Fashion Week often brings a smokey eye, sometimes in unique combinations like purple & bronze instead of black or grey, but this season, much of the focus was on the lips, with a few notable exceptions.
What we found:
RED LIPS
We saw lots of red lips this season, which is always fun! The tones ranged from a tomato red at J Mendel & Rebecca Minkoff to a mid-range red at Erin Fetherstone & Nima to a rich, deep wine tone at Cynthia Rowley, Cynthia Steffe and Mulberry. Eyes were a bit smokey, but fairly understated.

To get the look: Try our L WORD BETTE SHEER LIPSTICK for TOMATO RED, BALLET RUSSE or COOL RED for the MID RANGE RED and COOL BURGUNDY Lipstick for the deep WINE tone.

LOVELY EYES
Lela Rose showed us a gorgeous, innovative smokey eye this season, with lots of black around the outer corners, deep blue as you move inward and a pretty fishscale green on the inner corners.

To get the look: We thought this look was a standout, so don’t be surprised if we add a fishscale green to our collection this fall! In the meantime, try starting on the inner corners with Gold, blend outward with Warm Celery then Warm Midnight, then Cool Black.

UNIQUE CHEEKS
ADAM Adam Lippes showed a very unusual look as well. Bubblegum pink was used very high on the cheekbone and blended upwards into the lower lashes with purple and navy blue.

To get the look: Apply Pink Hyacinth Watercolours for Cheeks very high on the cheekbones. Then apply Navy Eye Liner around the outer corners of the eyes. Focus on the lower, outer lashes and buff downwards into the Pink Hyacinth with Warm Aubergine Eye Shadow.

MORTE!
We’re not quite sure about this one, but we saw quite a few examples of very drab or dark lips and postmortem faces. Rodarte was in our opinion the champion of this (or the biggest offender, depending on how you look at it), taking the look all over the face by combining grey and bronze with a muddy “greige” on the lips. Other culprits were Vigal Azrouel & Herve Leger on the “greige” lips front and Doo.Ri & Rachel Roy on the dark lips front.

To get the look: Experiment with combining Silver and Bronze or Warm Nutmeg Eye Shadows to highlight and contour the face. Apply concealer on the lips blended with Silver Eye Shadow for the “greige” look and or experiment with Cool Black Eye Shadow combined with concealer on the lips for a darker lip tone.

60th Annual Primetime Emmy's Makeup Trends

We always look forward to the Emmy's to see what's going on in Hollywood beauty!

This year, eyes were dramatically lined on top and bottom with lots of mascara, which we felt looked great on a lot of actresses, but this application did give some actresses smaller-looking, almost squinty eyes (not everyone has the eye shape to carry this look successfully, i.e. Hayden Panetierre). We didn't see as much smokiness as we have in recent years. Eva Longoria Parker was one of the only exceptions, and her makeup actually felt a bit overdone.

Lip color was of real interest to us this year. We knew that dark lips were coming back this season (which we were very excited about!), and the Emmy's didn't disappoint. There were a few throwbacks to the red carpet beige lips we've seen in recent years (Hayden Panettierre, Heidi Klum, Lauren Conrad), but overall, lip color was deep, in flattering mauves (Teri Hatcher, Kira Sedgwick, Vanessa Williams, Padma Lakshmi, Chandra Wilson, Mary Steenburgen) and soft Fall russets (Kate Walsh, January Jones, Christina Applegate, Susan Sarandon, America Ferrera).

The awards were held this year in the Grand Ballroom of the Plaza on Central Park South. The evening was totally off the hook! Champagne flowed, Natasha Bedingfield performed a 5 song set (amazing) and we WON for Best Sheer Lipstick. Our new shade "Ballet Russe" from our forthcoming Czarina Collection was honored! At the end of the evening everyone in attendance got a "Goodie Bag". And I use the term loosely as it was actually a full sized suitcase with over $3,000.00 worth of goodies! Good thing they were on wheels as we could barely lift them into the cab! Pics of the evening and Goodie Suitcases to come!

PALE & MONOCHROMATIC

THE LOOK: Skin is pale, flawless and luminous. Light color on eyes, lips and cheeks
To get THE LOOK, we recommend: Use Creme Concealer with a heavy hand all over the face (you could experiment with a shade slightly lighter than your natural tone for this look). Highlight the upper cheek bones, brow bones and nose with NEW! Afterglow Mood Lighting Shimmer Crème. Light Clarifier on the inner rims. Line the eyes lightly with Smoke Eye Pencil and buff out with Warm Pebble to soften. Cool Beige Lipstick or Warm Rose for a little more color.

BRONZE GODDESS / BEACHY

THE LOOK: Midnight dark rimmed eyes with a russet smokiness. Bronzed skin and soft, neutral lips.

To get THE LOOK, we recommend: Navy Eye Liner for the inner rims and Cool Midnight Eye Shadow around the lashes, buffed out with Copper and Warm Nutmeg Eye Shadows. NEW! On Fire Mood Lighting Shimmer Cremes on the face and cheeks and Simply Beautiful Lipstick.

NOT SO MUCH...
THE LOOK: a sculpted face accented by very dark, blueish purple lips. The lip was incredibly dark, so it didn’t flatter many of the models.

This season is off to an exciting start with gorgeous, eclectic fashion with makeup to match. Below, I have provided a rundown of the trends I've seen so far as well as some looks that I found extraordinary.

SMOKEY EYE
THE DESIGNERS: Carolina Herrera, Rock & Republic, Halston, DVF, Alexander Wang.
The Look: Black lined eyes, blended out with soft blueish greys. The lips and cheeks are a cool, fleshy tone.
To get the look, we recommend: Three Custom Color Specialists' Black Eye Liner, Cool Smoke Eye Shadow and Cool Lilac Eye Shadow. Warm Lavender Lipstick on the lips and Violet Lotus Watercolours for Cheeks.

RED LIPS - COOL & WARM
The Look(s): There were lot of red lips out there, some warm and bricky (50's style) and some cool and berry (40's style). Many red lips were paired with a luminous highlighted face, which is a lovely combination, especially when the focus is on the lips and the rest of the face is soft and glowing.

To Get the Look, we recommend: Cool Red Lipstick on the lips, a very soft application of Scarlet Peony Watercolours for Cheeks and then highlight the face with our NEW! To get the look, we recommend: Smoke Eye Liner blended out with Cool Lilac Eye shadow. Coral Waterlily Watercolours for Cheeks and Warm Peach Lip Gloss. Use our NEW! Afterglow Mood Lighting Shimmer Crème to highlight the face.

THE DESIGNER: Nicole Miller
The Look: Very heavy, super smokey eye using deep purples, blacks and bronze. Soft lips & cheeks. Sexy!

The Look: Eyes literally drowning in Icey blue, bright peach cheeks and silvery lips. Only pretty on one or two of the models.

To get the look: Cool Sky Eye shadow, blended out with Opal Eye Shadow. Poppy Lip & Cheek Stain and Champagne Eye shadow mixed with Crystal Clear Lip Gloss.

THE DESIGNER: Diesel
The Look: a fairly benign makeup look overall that is accented by oddly colored brows (dark blue??). hhmmm….

To get the look: Create a bronzed look with NEW! On Fire Mood Lighting Shimmer Crèmes. Create heavy brows with Cool Midnight Eye Shadow (or Cool Brown Sugar Eye Shadow for a more subdued version of this look).

THE DESIGNER: Narcisco Rodriguez
The Look: An otherwise understated face, with black liquid eye liner all around the eyes. This looked quite heavy handed on many of the models

To get the look: Rose Creme to Powder Blush on the lips and cheeks, Cool Camel Eye Shadow on the eye lids and Cool Black Eye Shadow (used wet) all around the eye (including the inner corner).

Note: A similar look was used at Matthew Williamson and because the black eye liner was smudged out, it looked very rock and roll sexy. Try that as a great alternative!

ON THE FENCE
THE DESIGNER: Behnaz Serafpour (similar look was also used at Jeremy Laing, but it was more more understated - still not pretty on many of the models, though!)
The Look: Shimmering pastel blues and pinks all around the eyes. Very flushed cheeks and pink lips. While this looked lovely on a few of the models, it ended up looking bruisy on many of them.

To Get the Look: Silver Eye Shadow, Cool Sky and Cool Peony around the eyes, Pink Creme to Powder Blush on the Cheeks and Rose Quartz Lip Gloss
